Interview with Karl Heine and Robin McLoughlin

It’s been several decades since Karl and I met and began collaborating. Our relationship dates back to my first agency days at Clarion Marketing in Greenwich, CT. and I’m happy to say we’re still in touch and inspiring each other.

Robin: I know you’ve been heavily involved in supporting the creative community through many avenues throughout your career, including the Type Directors Club, so, where do you look for inspiration these days?

Karl: Travelling with my wife kHyal, to Art Basel, international travel and NYC galleries always bring me creative inspiration.

Robin: And is there a place that makes you feel more creative?

Karl: In our studio where I have all my materials and equipment—it’s about making and experimenting.

Robin: Tell me what you are you working on now that you are excited about.

Karl: Creating a new line of journals utilizing materials that are 100% eco-friendly made of plant base materials, with zero plastic or petroleum chemical additives.

Robin: What are your hobbies and interests these days?

Karl: My interests and curiosity revolve around photography, typography, print design, vintage advertising ephemera and fossil digging in Wyoming.

Robin: And since I love antiques and I know you do too, I must ask, what is your favorite heirloom?

Karl: I have many—my favorite is my grandmother’s first journal and her trip to Europe in 1929 where she met my grandfather while she was on a singing tour with her church. I have all of her journals which defined her life in great detail. The importance of keeping a written record of our experiences remains a tactile process.
