Global Citizenship Annual Report

Biography
Noel Tocci has a reputation among the design elite as the man who brings print to life. For over 40 years, Noel has been partnering with designers across the globe to help bring their projects to life as printed masterpieces.

A true collaborator and print partner, Noel and his bespoke production group, TocciMade operate primarily in the design, creative, and luxury brand markets. Working with some of the greatest artists and designers today, TocciMade is considered one of the creative industry’s best-kept secrets when they need to bring beautiful, tangible things to life from concept to reality.

As any designer with experience knows, printing physical objects is an art form in and of itself. You have to be passionate, knowledgeable, demanding, relentlessly detailed, and a little bit crazy. Noel navigates the nuanced relationship between design and the seemingly endless substrate and production possibilities while simultaneously managing the expectations of his clients and working with his partners to ensure optimal outcomes. He is relentlessly passionate about his work and equally caring about fostering young designers' appreciation for and understanding of production protocols and techniques. In addition to his demanding project commitments, Noel has also been a speaker, educator, and collaborator at AIGANY, NYU SPS, Parsons School of Design / The New School, & FIT, along with contributing to the Podcast “Making it with Print.”

A conversation with Noel Tocci and Robin McLoughlin

Noel and I were introduced by Mohawk Paper many moons ago and we’ve been working together ever since on thought leadership style annual reports and history books. Noel knows just about everyone in the industry because of his stellar reputation as a print guru and a solid human who can create solutions. Years ago, for example, Noel introduced me to one of his elite clients, the late and great Massimo Vignelli whom I had the pleasure of working with on an InSource presentation at FIT.

Robin: Noel, as busy as you always are, it’s impressive you still find time to support the creative community through presenting, teaching, and attending events.

Noel: I love being part of making beautiful, tactile, colorful, inspiring, tangible things…

Robin: And that always shows in your work. One of the attributes that made you such a good partner for me was your patience and ability to teach. You are an excellent teacher, and for that, I thank you. You educated me and my staff tenfold over the years to enhance our knowledge of print and become impressive makers, turning out award-winning projects.

Noel: Well, it helps to have an audience that wants to make a difference and raise the bar. I’m a printer who makes tactile things, and I love learning about haptics, the science behind how the brain reacts to the sense of touch. For example, something heavy equals authenticity.

CASE STUDY

The Global Citizenship Review project had a few interesting challenges and amazing results.

The cover was printed on 80 lb. Cover Oxford Neenah White with a unique cross-cross blind-debossed pattern and full-bleed image on the inside cover. The White & Case logo was embossed and silver foiled, and then the hand-sketched type was printed in CMYK. Additionally, the binding has a vibrant spine that teases the stunning Steve McCurry image that awaits inside, which was beautifully printed on Mohawk Options + Navajo Brilliant White Smooth Text 80 lb.
